All bookings for this session include entry for one participating child aged 7 - 14 as well as one free adult helper aged 18+

After a brief introduction to the centre, you will be shown to the first activity. We will then rotate through each of the four available activities in turn. All participating children will have an equal opportunity to try all four available activities before the end of the full two hour session, so nobody will miss out!

The exact order and duration of each activity may differ slightly on the day, however children will be able to have a go at:

  • Bug house building - Assemble your own bug house and fill it with a range of natural materials to provide the perfect habitat for garden minibeasts. As a bonus, you'll be able to take your finished bug house home!

  • Pond dipping - Discover the variety of creatures that lurk within a typical wetland habitat, such as the pond-skater, water boatman and maybe even a frog or two! How many can you find?

  • Owl Pellet Dissection - Put on your detective hat and learn how to identify animal bones left over from an owl's last meal - a useful tool for researchers that reveals the availability of important prey species nearby.

  • Owl/Bird of Prey Flying - Grab a glove and have a go at flying a small owl or bird of prey species whilst learning from those who are lucky enough to work in conservation every day (that's us)!

A member of BOWC staff will be on hand at each activity to provide the necessary instruction and materials, but some assistance by accompanying adults will also be expected.

Once the session is over, you are free to spend as much time as you like viewing our owl and bird of prey collection, and are welcome to return for our flying demonstration (where one is available.)

Here's what other people have been saying...

Fantastic experience

What a fantastic experience! [We] got to make a bug house, do some pond dipping, owl pellet dissection and [...] fly a small owl and a Harris hawk (and [held] a baby owl called Penfold). We will book the next one for sure 😊

Who Can Take Part?

This session is designed for children aged 7 - 14. All bookings for this experience also include one free spectator who will be the child's appointed adult helper (aged 18+)*. Any additional spectators must be aged 14+.

The appointed adult helper will be expected to provide their child with assistance while taking part in some of the activities, so you should be prepared to take an active role.

Up to 10 children can take part on this session. Your party will be joined by other children taking part on the same experience, but the total number of participants will never exceed ten.

We are confident that our sessions can be enjoyed by anybody irrespective of age or ability. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in taking part but have additional needs, we would be happy to discuss how best to accommodate these so that you are able to get the most from your time with us.

*Only one free spectator (adult helper) will be included per booking. If you intend to book multiple child spaces (and the children will be participating together) only one adult helper is required, e.g. one parent accompanying their two children.
